RHYTHM ON THE RIVER | 2013 SCHEDULE
Columbus Recreation and Parks Department welcomes a variety of performing artists to Bicentennial Park for the Rhythm on the River series. Featuring everything from bluegrass to blues to ballet and more, attending a Rhythm on the River performance is a great way to spend summer evenings with family and friends. These free outdoor performances take place at the Bicentennial Park Performing Arts Pavilion, a state-of-the-art venue with architecture that reflects the design of the Scioto Mile Fountain.

Booker T. Jones is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history. As leader of the legendary Booker T and the MG’s, this pillar of soul music collaborated with Otis Redding, Albert King, Eddie Floyd and Sam and Dave during his tenure at the renowned Stax Records label. Since then, Booker has lent his trademark keyboard chops to artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and produced classic albums such as Willie Nelson’s triple platinum hit “Stardust” and Bill Withers’ “Just As I Am” featuring the hit song “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Peter’s work as a solo artist is also stellar, turning any venue into a living room and encouraging the audience to change their part of the world. His shows are memorable evenings rooted in the historic milestones of his past, yet focused on the current issues that continue to call him to activism.

Yumbambé is Latin Jazz, bringing together the lush sound of jazz harmony with the vibrant rhythms of Afro-Cuban drumming. Lead by Eric “the FISH” Paton, Yumbambé floats the greats of the Jazz standard collection on the tide of Latin rhythm and culture that has splashed the shores of popular music for decades. The arrangements are presented in a diverse collection of rhythms including meringue, calypso, bembe, cha cha, samba and bossa nova. Male and female vocals along with an eclectic mix of authentic percussion instruments make Yumbambé a unique and exciting group. The band includes some of Columbus’ most prominent Jazz musicians, who have performed with many Jazz and Latin greats.

After thirty years in the business, Lonesome River Band continues to deliver powerful, driving bluegrass with a rock-influenced edginess that distinguishes its music from any other. Featuring the remarkable banjoist Sammy Shelor, perhaps the most influential banjo player of his generation, the Lonesome River Band is truly one of the greatest bands in bluegrass.
Fronting one of the most popular bands in bluegrass history, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out is one of the most influential groups in bluegrass. Garnering more than 50 industry accolades since their inception, their a-cappella renditions of many songs can rarely be matched and their superb instrumentation provides even more quality sound to their rich vocal blend featuring one of the most respected lead vocalists of all time.

Columbus Recreation and Parks, Flying Gent Mercantile and Columbus Young Professionals Club has teamed up for the most talked about fashion event of the summer! Uniting live music and runway fashion all on one stage, Fashion Rocks Columbus celebrates the energetic display of a growing culture of fashion in our city. The Floorwalkers, named “One of Columbus’ most beloved bands” by Columbus Alive!, will offer the soundtrack for this unique collaboration as top local designers and boutiques showcase their inspired looks. An outdoor social event hosted by the Columbus Young Professionals Club will kick off the evening.

Formed in the early 90’s by singer/guitarist Michael Glabicki, Rusted Root’s worldly style quickly charmed fans of roots music and world rock. To date they have released 7 albums and sold over 3 million records worldwide. After debuting in 1992 with the self-released Cruel Sun, Rusted Root signed with Mercury Records and released the 1994 platinum selling breakthrough When I Woke, which featured the massive hits ”Send Me On My Way,” and “Ecstasy” and “Martyr.” Their huge success allowed the band to tour with Santana, The Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, HORDE Festival and, perhaps most notably, the highly coveted support role on the landmark Jimmy Page/Robert Plant reunion tour.

McGuffey Lane’s high-energy rock, country and contemporary music have been attracting attention throughout Ohio and the Midwest for nearly twenty years. But this veteran band remains fresh and innovative, redefining itself with an infusion of new talent that blends perfectly with the bands established style. Ever since their magical ‘break” when the band was playing the Ohio State campus years ago and got discovered and signed to a record deal, McGuffey Lane has built their career on music which has been both artistically and commercially successful, leading the group to tours with The Charlie Daniel’s Band, The Judds, Marshall Tucker, and The Allman Brothers.

Harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite’s life reads like a classic blues song: born in Mississippi, raised in Memphis and schooled on the South Side of Chicago. A groundbreaking recording artist since the 1960s, Musselwhite continues to create trailblazing music while remaining firmly rooted in the blues. His worldly-wise vocals, rich, melodic harmonica playing and deep country blues guitar work flawlessly accompany his often autobiographical and always memorable original songs. Living Blues says, “Musselwhite’s rock-solid vocals creep up and overwhelm you before you know it. He plays magnificent harp with superb dexterity and phrasing. The results are amazing.”
