About the Santa Maria
The Santa Maria is temporarily closed in order to continue work on the Scioto Greenways Project. The ship will reopen in the spring of 2016. The Santa Maria is recognized as the world’s most authentic, museum-quality representation of Christopher Columbus’ flagship. The non-sailing replica was built in 1991 by Scarano Boatbuilding Inc. of Albany, New York and dedicated in 1992 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the trans-Atlantic voyage.
Guided tours dramatize the daring and determination it took for explorers to set out on their mission. Fascinating displays show the far-ranging impact of the encounter of two worlds that existed in 1492. Experience the lives explorers led, interact with replicas of the navigational tools they used, and play the games they played to pass the time.
