Construction on Civic Center Drive will last until summer 2009.

The emergence of the Scioto Mile is really within reach.  Although it doesn’t officially debut until 2011, it’s been evolving and taking shape.  We’re getting real tastes of what will be a riverfront oasis, perfectly primed for daily escapes into the glorious outdoors.

Driving towards the big debut, there will be three twists in the road –literally. Navigating won’t be too difficult, but we all know that it’s easier to get around with eyes wide open.  These twists affect both the four-wheeled and the (delightfully increasing) two-wheeled traveling population.

The first twist centers around Civic Center Drive: it will continue to have one lane open to southbound traffic until construction ceases in July 2009. At that time, Civic Center will join the trend for downtown in having more two-way, two-lane, pedestrian-friendly roads.

Second Street is actually the second twist in the road.  Anticipate lane restrictions as it transitions into a gateway to the park from the south (from November 2009-June 2011). Marconi Boulevard north of Broad Street will experience some minor lane closures at the end of 2008, but traffic will still be able to get through.

Finally, Bicentennial Park is getting a makeover and will be enhanced to include a permanent stage for performances, café and fountains.  It’ll close next summer as the installation process begins.
Hang in there! By the summer festival season in 2012, the Scioto Mile will be a premier venue for the City’s downtown events. The Jazz & Rib, Latino and Arts Festivals can return to their familiar, yet enriched Riverfront location.

Red, White & Boom will continue to light up the sky every July 3, launching from just north of Veterans Memorial. The Scioto Mile construction will have no effect on the same terrific show everyone has grown accustomed to over the years.

The Scioto Mile is just around the bend!
