The Fountain

Visit the Scioto Mile Fountain

Since opening in 2011, the Scioto Mile Fountain has become one of downtown Columbus’ most recognizable riverfront landmarks. A centerpiece of summer along the Scioto River, the fountain has long been a place where families gather, children play and visitors pause to enjoy the energy of the city.

In 2024, the fountain was enhanced to create an even more dynamic and welcoming experience. The upgrades introduce new technology, expanded seating and vibrant lighting features that make the space more interactive and enjoyable for everyone. These improvements strengthen the fountain’s role as a lively public gathering place while helping support the connectivity and vitality of downtown Columbus.

The Scioto Mile Fountain is managed by Downtown Columbus, Inc. and is part of the Columbus Recreation and Parks system.

Weather and Safety Updates

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, the Scioto Mile Fountain may temporarily close during certain conditions.

Severe Weather

In the event of severe weather, the fountain will close and visitors will be asked to leave the park and seek shelter. The fountain will immediately shut down if lightning is detected within four miles. Operations will resume once there has been no lightning within that radius for at least 30 minutes.

Hourly Breaks

The fountain pauses for the final ten minutes of every hour and restarts at the top of the hour. This short break encourages guests to use nearby restrooms and stay hydrated.

Cool Temperatures

If temperatures drop below 65 degrees, the fountain may operate in a reduced power mode. Full operation may resume when visitors are present.

Health & Sanitation

To maintain a safe environment for everyone, the fountain must close for up to four hours following any fecal or vomiting incident to allow for proper sanitation. Visitors who are feeling unwell are asked to stay home. Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper while in the fountain.

Light Show Hours

Guests are not permitted in the fountain during the nightly light show from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The light show will not run during rain.
